DES MOINES, Iowa - Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego won her seventh NCAA Championship
and first in the 5,000M with a time of 15:15.06. The Lady Raiders had three
student-athletes earn All-American status on Fri.
Kipegyo, who lost the 5,000M last season to Michelle Sikes of Wake Forest, ran a dominating race. Her time of 15:15.06 was a Drake Stadium record and a NCAA Championship meet record. The NCAA Championship meet record was set last season by Sikes.
"I really wanted to win because last year was a very exciting race and it is still my favorite race from my collegiate career." Kipyego said after the race. "So I wanted to win the title because it is the only title I haven't been able to win."
This was Kipyego's second outdoor title and seventh NCAA title overall. She beat the second place finisher by over 30 seconds. Kipyego will try for her eighth NCAA Championships tomorrow as she will compete in the 1500M at 4:12 p.m.
In the women's discus, D'Andra Carter earned her second straight All-American honor of her career. She threw 181'-7" to finish in third place. Carter is the only Lady Raider in school history to earn All-American in the discus.
Senior Irene Kimaiyo placed fifth in the women's 3K steeplechase with a time of 10:05.29. It is her second All-American honor as she was eighth in the 5,000M last year. Kimaiyo is the first Lady Raider to earn All-American honors in the 3K steeplechase.
Tech is the only school that qualified two male student-athletes for the 110M hurdles or 400M hurdles. The four-time All-American Shawon Harris qualified by placing third in his heat with a time of 13.63. Omo Osaghae qualified with a new personal-best time of 13.65 in his first NCAA Championships.
Anthony Flemons failed to qualify for the finals of the men's triple jump.
The Lady Raiders are sitting in fourth place with a total of twenty points. Tech will start the final day of the NCAA Championships tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with the women's shot put.
