The New Deal Lions were the first of the four area teams still alive in the post season to punch their ticket to the state tournament on Friday.

New Deal defeated Seymour, 8-7, in eight innings to win the Region I-1A title and advance to state for a third straight season.

Roosevelt came a step closer with its 3-1 win over Blanco in second game of the Region I-2A final series.  The decisive third game begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in Abilene.

Meanwhile, Estacado dropped its series opener with Canyon Randall, 1-0.  The Matadors must now sweep Saturday's doubleheader if they want to make their first state tournament appearance since 1982.  The second game of the series begins at 1 p.m. Saturday in Plainview.

The only area team that saw its season come to an end was Cooper.  The Pirates won the second game of the series, 9-5, on Friday but could not sweep the Abilene Wylie.  The Bulldogs won the third and final game of the series, 8-3.
